Your 51�� Semester Global Internship program in Legon lasts 12 weeks and features three key components: a full-time internship with an international organization (approximately 30 hours per week), an internship seminar, and the option to take a course taught online through 51��’s global academic partner, ASU. Housing & Meals

Housing

51�� Legon offers various housing options, which include homestays, off-campus hostel, and off-campus apartment-style housing. Housing options are located around the Legon campus, with convenient access to downtown Accra (roughly 45 minutes away) but are close to 51�� Legon on campus (20 to 40 minutes away).  

Standard Housing: Includes a single/double room at a homestay or a triple or quad room at an off-campus hostel located within 45 minutes from 51�� Legon.

Homestays: Homestays boast a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family.
Off-campus Hostel: The off-campus hostel offers triple or quad-occupancy en-suite rooms, with shared common spaces such as the fitted kitchen and a lounging area.

Select Plus Housing: Includes a single-occupancy air-conditioned room in apartment-style housing off-campus, located within 20 minutes from 51�� Legon. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee.   

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals

Homestay: Hosts provide breakfast and dinner during the week, and students get lunch on their own. Hosts provide all three meals on weekends.  

Hostels/Apartment-style Housing: Meals are not included. Students prepare meals (facilities are limited) or eat on or off campus.

51�� Legon: Study on the University of Ghana’s campus, located in the quiet suburbs of Accra. 51�� Legon features three main classrooms, a general space that can also serve as a large classroom, a modest library, a lounge area for relaxation, and a vast outdoor space (with a mini football field and a basketball court).

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by 51�� in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with optional online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the 51�� academic calendar.

Requirements

All Global Semester Internship participants take the 9-credit full-time internship with the required embedded internship seminar, plus an optional ASU online course (ASU session A in spring, and ASU session B in fall) for a total of 9-13 semester credits.

51�� internship: 9 U.S. semester credits/13.5 quarter credits; 45 hours of in-person and asynchronous online learning activities and a minimum of 360 internship placement hours.
ASU online courses: Typically 3 - 4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-60 contact hours

Academic Culture

51�� courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The integrated academic course, which correlates with the internship, is taught in-person and asychronously. Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by 51�� and the host organization.

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students participate in a full-time in-person internship and required academic course featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work designed to help students develop professional and intercultural competencies to complement their internship experience.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 51�� courses begin or end.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of in-class and online engagement and preparation, and specific assessments such as project work, presentations, and examinations.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person.
